Those SUB rays are the other ones I've been eyeing a lot.

I like my Squier VM jaguar pretty good though. But like I said, it's the only bass I've ever owned thus far

Edit: anyone bought through these guys? I love this finish....

I'd go real cheap http://www.rondomusic.com/bassguitars5.html

+ the alnico magnets of your choice & you have a decent instrument. When you buy a cheap instrument it won't be set up like Gibson USA or Fender USA. I recommend learning to set up a guitar & soldering iron if you want to replace pickups you'll be fine.

Sterling subs are excellent. Also check zzounds or ams & Sweetwater. Almost free financing.

hmmm I didn't think about rondo.... I don't know much about them.
However, I am no stranger to modifying guitars.

Not terrible. Maybe not as robust as ESP/LTD or Squier, but they're fine if you invest a little elbow grease. I'd certainly take a SUB over SX but for short money you can't beat Rondo. I have the 6-str Jazz copy & have owned 4 or 5 of their basses in the past.
I heard GFS is okay too but I don't they make a 5-str. There's also Jay Turser. Again, not sure if 5. What I did was get the Squier Freeman model & string it up as BEAD. I'm very happy with it.

I've heard rondo's quality is very up and down, I would be wary, usually you get what you pay for.

Yes of course you do. They require some work maybe some modifications. Not bad really.

Squier, Sterling SUB, Ibanez, Peavey are all good brands.
