I usually don't 80's Rock but when I do it's the first couple Motley Crüe, Iron Maidan, Slayer, Metal Licka, Janes Addiction, Nirvana (Bleach came out in '89 and is the best), Motörhead, Big Black, Minor Threat/Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Misfits, Black Flag, MBV, Fear, Subhumans, blah blah blah... As well as what has already been mentioned; the 80's Rawked...

I'm forgetting shit but I'll let y'all fill in the gaps...

Dinosaur Jr were better in the 80s than they were in the 90s but the answer is probably Sonic Youth overall or another band, fuck sake

Only person to ever win all 4 general field grammy awards in one year-clearly he deserved every one.

This fucking song is about sailing and was the best song of 1980.

Which is why I dropped that little Duran Duran nugget. If we were talking metal, I'd suggest a different band.

I want to be a boss and say "a~ha" , but that's just my personal bias.

I'm just glad no one has said The Rolling Stones like some TGP or Guitar World chump.

Thanks for being cool, ILF.

If not Duran x2, then probably talking heads for the amount of pedals Adrian used.

Subhumans, Dead Kennedys, Killing Joke, Amebix, Rudimentry Peni, Flux of Pink Indians, Crass, Cabaret Voltaire, Sore Throat, GISM, Gauze, The Specials, Madness, Oi Polloi, Sore Throat, Napalm Death, Conflict, Kraftwerk, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Culture Shock O.L.D..

Eh, can't choose and wouldn't want to.

I guess UK: Crass or Subhumans, US: Dead Kennedys, Japan: GISM.

Straight rock through?: Toy Dolls, I think.

(Clash did their best stuff in the 1970s as did Devo and Kraftwerk...I would have said Bowie too but Let's Dance just ruined it all)

Too many great bands.

Gawd, questions like this make my head hurt. So much great shit; so much heinous shit. These days? I say Plugz. Laugh all you want. I used to say Minutemen. What the fuck? So many. Kip Hanrahan's Conjure collective, Rip Rig and Panic, Medium Medium, Chameleons, Bad Seeds, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Jellyfish, the Waterboys, Richard Thompson, the Pogues, the motherfucking Time. Most of the Dischord and SST labels, Eugene Chadbourne, Jellyfish, Fishbone, the fucking Stick Men. What the fuck!?!? Reductivist bullshit. The 8Ts were so fucked up. Hallows Eve, Metal Church, Misfits, Cramps, X, Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper. Killing Joke for absolutely fucking sure. Band after band with Foetus in the name. Agent Orange. Dwight Fucking Yoakam. Gawd, stop it. Music was the savior, the reason to go on. Music was a fucking ice pick to the ear. I could go on like this all night. Make this random list/screed look like lies and wankery or the word of Geddy. Just. In my eyes this is not just a fool's errand, but a Door Into Madness. I fucking hate nostalgia. But, hey, have fun with it kids.

Fucking 8Ts. I was so happy when they died. I was so heartbroken when I realized what crawled into the shell. Long live the 9Ts.

PS I liked lordgalvar's list. Forgot about that whole Two Tone movement for a sec. Also, Linton Kwesi Johnson for Federation Chairman.

So much stuff on your list I wanted to add to, but I started to cut it down haha. Mojo Nixon, Foetus, X, Misfits, et al. were awesome. Too many good bands from such a shit time (it was a bad time and the 90s were so much better, but the music wasn't haha).

Going to see Dwight with X next month!

I just put Sore Throat up there for the laughs (though it is a blast).
