You can find some variation of Rat for $50, like a You Dirty Rat or DIY. Classic underground-rock distorted bass rock sounds there.

Marshall Guv'nor Plus GV2. Awesome w/ bass, best eq, gritty overdrive to distortion.

Boss Bass Overdrive ODB3. Distortion as hell, with a clean blend.

One of the Digitech Hardwire distortions; internal voltage pump gives you 15v headroom = awesome for bass, true bypass, they stack well.
CM2 Tube Overdrive / Tube Distortion will get you that sharp punchy Jesus Lizardy sound.
SC2 Valve Overdrive is more distorted, more Rat-like in settings.
TL2 Metal Distortion is the highest gain, haven't found a bass setting I like with this one yet, but it's there.

EHX Bass Big Muff. Common used, and would bring the cheap noise rock gain.

I've actually got a Rat Tail on the way, maybe I should just use that? It has been a while since I've owned a pedal that says "metal" on I though. The Behringer is a good idea. I traded my HM-2 for an FZ-2 a while back and I liked the HM-2 more. Is there a Behr HM-2? I think so. Fullbore seems interesting too. I wouldn't mind being able to chugga chugg on guitar when I feel like getting metal. Decisions decisions.

Rat Tail should work!

I bought the Digitech Hardwire TL2 for the same reason; all my pedals that said "metal" ('cept my HM2) got sold or traded off! It's easy to find good guitar distortion with it, just haven't messed with it enough on bass yet - didn't really buy it for bass use, but it sounded good enough to mess with it further.

Behringer HM300 = HM2 clonie.

Just the Rat Tail with whatever other dirt before/after it might do the trick too. If you're not after anything in particular and just want a trashy high gain tone, I think the rat+fz-2 route should at least get you close enough. Or if the fz-2 doesn't like to stack, I'm sure you've got somthing else laying around you can crank and put after the rat, right?

Fact; you stack a Superfuzz and a heavy OD / distortion for bass, say GOODBYE to bass speaker(s). Pure square wave. Watch the gain level on the stacker, and your volume! Destroyed a speaker a month or two ago w/ my Fuzz Master and Monarch stacked.

I should think more critically about stuff I already own  the Rat Tail is gonna boot my Rat/IC Muff dual pedal from my board. So I can use that + Blue Box + Fingerprint. All of those were built/modded by the same guy, and he's a native of the town we'll be playing in, so I'm sure he'll appreciate me using his stuff on his turf. That being said, something big, nasty, and cheap, might be fun to add into the mix.
