I would rather get a real DX, they have more operators, this one has 4.

I've owned a DX7-2FD (6op/sine), a TX-802 (6op/sine), a TX-81Z (4op/multi), and a PSS-480 (2op/shitty sine). The 6op synths only had sine wave, but since you had 6 and could do more complex algorthms, you can mimic other sounds better: a more realistic sounding bell or e-piano or organ. But I found since the 4ops had more waveshapes, they more than made up for the lack of operators. They sounded more buzzy and synthetic, but they were better from a synthesis perspective for inventing weird new sounds. I think it all depends on the application. 4op is also a little easier to understand. I REALLY wish they had hi-res continuous knobs instead of incremental touch thingys though. That makes the FM so much fun on the Pocket Piano.

I think I had read that the ReFace DX has feedback available on every operator, too, and not just on one, as is typical on most hardware and even a lot of software, like the FM4 app I have on my iPad. Not sure how much that opens up, but it is beyond the old. One wonders if you can get the hands on tweaking going in real time through the patch librarian capabilities (iOS and Google Chrome web browser-based).

Still, oof, $500. Even trusting info that the mini keys are well engineered, great feeling stuff, that's a lot to throw at a limited-scope keyboard, at least for a dabbler like me.
