The shit the bed live nets you great humor sometimes (See the Dead Kennedy's "Night of the Living Rednecks", "Ray's guitar broke" (Echoplex).....) or takes you to different places.
One of my earliest coffeeshop gigs the erase head on my 'plex shit the bed.
I used it anyway. Hijinks ensued.
And I realized that weird in that level of uncontrolled was both fun and doable if you rode with it.
I haven't been the same since.
And none of my Space Echoes ever trashed themselves onstage.
Most I did (back in the days of smoky bars) was clean the heads before every set.

Little update:
Just for shits/giggles, I broke out my caliper and measured the tape guide bearing and pinch roller dimensions, and got the sizing for all the cap nuts and the thumbscrew and chassis screws. Replacement tape guide bearings turn out to be easy to find and cheap. I'm testing a few different bearings now, but they all seem to work about the same. So that's good. And all the screws and nuts are metric and easy to get as well.
Pinch rollers, on the other hand, are not cheap and there are very few sources (all are retail). And there are no currently manufactured equivalents available at the wholesale level. I've been looking because...well because fuck paying $60 for a pinch roller.

So I'm investigating the possibilities of having some made. It may end up being outlandishly cost-prohibitive, but I want to run it down anyway and just find out. Hurray for China!
I also noticed that my Space Echo is missing one of the tape assembly height adjustment screws, so I gotta get that sorted as well, but it shouldn't be too bad.
