Cheap something to hold you over is a wise choice.
When I was without during the dark days after my move out here, I bought the first acceptable cheapie (plywood-body Strat clone in a color I hated, pickups that sucked the ass of asses) and loved it...versus nothing.
It let me hold my shit together long enough to keep working 90+ hour weeks and get something better within a few months.
