yeah I agree it has a lot to do with what you like to play. for instance I hate smaller guitars for chords, but I am down with short scale basses because I won't have to play as many chords

+1 the short scale can be cumbersome for people with larger mitts
For the sake of adding a counterpoint, I have larger hands and the mustang really helped me nail down inverted chords that spanned across four frets. Makes Swirlies riffing easy and fun. But for squished jazz chords and barre chords, it gets pretty cramped once you're going past the 8th fret.

^ true, but I also push for telecaster, if you want an esquire perhaps just buy a cheaper tele and "convert" it, cost of a pickguard and an hour of work ain't bad. Also I have to say the new squire teles are really nice and if your going for a MIM might wanna look into a used early/mid 90s MiM Telecasters, I like the necks better, they have tiny frets, and they have top loading bridge that I really like. I've had a 93 telecaster for while that I made into an Esquire for the same reason, I got kinda bored with the looks and I really like the esquire setup.
