I don't know if I would apply any heat to guitar strings. It would probably temper in some way them and make them more prone to breaking
I think the string slipping was due to my tight arseness by not changing them sooner. But when you have four guitars to supply with strings and don't work it would get a bit expensive to restring them all too often.
By the way morange, how's the fuzz pedal I built working out for you? Is it still even working?

I had this happen almost every time I changed a set of strings a few years back, mostly on my Jazzmaster but also on other guitars. No sharp edges on the bridge or tremolo or anything like that, it was purely because the strings were shitty quality and the tension on the top E caused the ball end to unwrap. I'd be able to hear it coming on before the string would pop - the string would start going flat and I knew it was on the way out. The strings were Ernie Ball Slinky 10-46s and as soon as I switched to a different brand (Rotosounds) the problem went away. I've read that D'Addario strings can have the same issue and I suspect they just aren't made real well made these days.

the strings in question are Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Botton 10-52. Well I won't be buying them anymore. Shame because I really like the feel and tension of them strings.
Time to start researching different brands of strings.

Other than my acoustic (on which I use Martin Silk and Steels) once I discovered DR strings I won't use anything else my my guitars or basses!

Thanks, I'll have a look at DR strings. Are they very pricey?
