Funny. Ever since EHX switched to using cheap smd-based pcbs made in china, I've read more complaints about noise in their gear, and myself have experienced very noisy pedals from them as well (the XO stereo clone theory is absolutely horrible for noise. The Flanger Hoax is the noisiest pedal ever made). Maybe somebody needs to finally admit that SMD components are terrible for audio equipment and have worse S/N ratios than even old carbon comp resistors, which is why a brand new XO big muff is noisier than even the first "triangle knob" muffs. SMD is used purely for it's cheapness. Sound quality is last on the list.

muffs have a noise floor once you turn up the gain, but it sounds like yours is worse than normal. it shouldn't be making noise when bypassed. I have had some nice muffs and still have the BAT sarcophagus that can be sludge in a box if you run em both at once. don't stop playing lol because if you do instead of feedback you just get muffy noise. sometimes that's fun too
Maybe you should look into something that covers muff territory with a gate or bias to cut your signal into crackily madness

It's a circuit with four gain stages.

My Swollen Pickle can be amazingly quiet, especially on battery power.
