I honestly meed to stop looking at dirt pedals, I wont have an amp for a long time and nothing is gonna sound good direct. And yeah I has Mini

I just tried the Steroid OD into my Sunn Beta Lead with my wife's squier jazz bass. It was a pretty underwhelming. It didn't give enough grit and it was kind of mushy.

I thought of the MASF Starry Wisdom.

Maybe a preamp is the way to go? Those Verellen ones look nice, too.

Or a Rusty Box. I think that might be the way to go. It gets clanky and biting but it doesn't have to. And its definitely not compressed. And I think it would sound pretty good direct. Can add just a touch of grit or a good bit. And, bonus, you won't have to buy a head. Just a cheap-ish power amp and a cab.

I am never quite happy with my sound and I always feel the need to explore more. Not in the "lol i need more pedlz" way but more like "I'm missing the point and I should be doing something else" way

it's funny… but for me the more any box is hyped even if I think the builder is a badass awesome dude, the less interest I has in it.. things like the rusty box, fuck, klon and so forth just hold less and less interest when they are what you read in every thread that said the Starry Wisdom is a interesting pedal, t's one of my go-to fuzzes

I feel like my love of fuzz is waining and all I want is a super low gain distortion that makes my bass dirty but doesnt clip and get all compressed. I dont know if thats a thing.

I sold all of my fuzzes and haven't touched any in months. Ironic given the name of the forum but it's just not an effect that works for me, distortion and boosters are where it's at. I've been happy on bass and guitar dirt with just a RAT set at super low gain being boosted by a graphic EQ to compensate low end loss evenly. Couldn't be happier. Clean enough to be a base tone but dig in for the GRIT. And still nice and clear with delay and reverb. And my 'heavy' sound has gone from a Buzzz and Elements to a $30 Denio 'Metal Rocker' pseudo-HM2 ripoff that somehow just sounds right to my ears there goes my ILF cred
There's no right or wrong way to it but i just noticed after a while I wasn't happy with how disconnected my fingers felt to what i was hearing, so i stopped using anything that sounded like it was obscuring the acoustic properties of the instrument. I think it's because i play electric guitar unplugged more than plugged in so when i plug it in it throws me off if its all compressed or hairy, wasn't as intuitive to me.

I just checked their website and it says "Modern Amphibious Sexcite Forces". I always thought it was just a shorthand way to spell "massive."
