is it bad that i'll drop $400+ dollars on a pedal in the blink of an eye when i totally can't afford to do so and sleep like a baby? and yet when i'm at the grocery store i'll get buyers remorse if i spend too much money on avocados or something?

There is so much truth in this. I get pedals for their more extravagant/unique settings or their ability to do both pristine and extreme. This means I have some expensive pedals on my board but I prefer not to talk much about pricing when people ask me about my pedals at gigs etc. because I don't want it to seem like I only got them to show off, because I didn't. I ain't one of those guys who buys a €400 OD pedal and goes forth to play classic rock or old blues covers with a mild, 'transparent', uses-NOS-from-the-50s-germanium-transistors-but-is-completely-noise-free-if-you-play-it-in-a-freezer pedal. I'm one of those guys who buys a €400 fuzz because of the squeals I get when I hit that second (or third ) footswitch and go all twisty & turny with my volume knob. Especially with a modulated delay/resonant filter or some other wacky stuff after it.

Not that there's anything wrong with classic rock or blues, I just think sterile blues is the worst blues.

Yeah, obviously expensive doesn't=awful, but neither does cheap equate to heinous.
Sound quality is a fluid notion anyway. Obviously there is stuff that sounds like shit in a shit way, and there is stuff that sounds like shit in the most delightful way possible.
Plus people around here know that there's more than one way to skin a cat, or get that function out of that pedal. or use that pedal in an atypical way to produce an interesting texture or what have you.
