Yeah I stopped by Action Music on the weekend and left some pools of drool... I need to find the tine to get out to Atonic (I think they've moved since the last time I was up there)...

Action is good for that....
Depends on how long its been, they're right around the corner from where they had been for like 5 years. It's right off the beltway, right on that main road, definitely a better and bigger location.

Yeah, last time I was up there they were in kinda like an industrial estate type place... I take it they moved into a nicer, stripmall-ish spot not long after that. If I wasn't working every damn day for the next 3 weeks I might try and roll out there...

Not super into active basses (Jag notwithstanding)...
Gotchya, and I totally said pickguard twice... I meant ebony fretboard.

If I had $500 and wanted/needed to buy a jazz, I'd buy a Squier CV. If I had $1000 and wanted/needed to buy a jazz, there is a good chance I'd buy 2 or 3 Squier CVs. If you ask me, they are that good. I find the pickups to be pretty decent, but with the extra money you'll have left over, you can swap in some new ones if needed, or even a preamp too.
Now, if I had $500 and was going to buy a bass, any bass, that's a whole other story...a CV jazz would be under consideration, but I'd probably grab a used SBMM SB14 or Ray 34ca or something like that. All the Sterling or Stingray goodness at a fraction of the cost. Generally speaking I always buy used, better stuff for less bucks.
