Percussion mics... about 4" from bowl. I have used a super short mic stand and audix D2 drum miss. They are the best and don't cost a lot. Bowls also need to be either on sand filled cushion or some other sort of pillow as the sound is driving up from the base of the bowl and that can be heard in the recording even if you can't really hear it in the room.

I didn't think about it but it should've been obvious how intricate such a simple instrument can be in some ways.
If I have any spare cash this week I might order some.

I love them, and now that I have some loot in the bank I think I'll order my own instead of bogarting other people's. I like the really small thick ones.

Thinking about it, I'm kinda reluctant to order crystal in the fear that they'd show up busted.

You get better tones out of them if you rub your boner around the rim of the bowl as opposed to your finger. Tone is all in the wang.

That seems like it may be the intended method, if the shape of these wands is anything to go by.
