I've tried a bunch and stuck with an original Maxon D&S which is the same as the Ibanez OD 850 for less money.

There are some more recent clones too. Here's one from El Musico Loco:

Joe Gore Duh is what sound the most interesting so far... but Tristan is right about the controls.
But thats the sound I'm looking for. Lots of low ends (but not metal).

More suggestions?

I haven't been through enough big muffs to make a good judgement, but I ended up realising that maybe I'm just not much of a muff person...

The main thing I dislike about muffs, is that with a little bit of tweaking almost all of em can sound good or even great...Untill you use it to jam with it in a loud band. Then you can start to stack your muff with other dirt, you try to mod it, you start looking for a muff with a mids control and other improvements...

That's pretty much my muff story, and right now I only rely on superfuzz type fuzzes, or maybe tonebenders. Anything that's not far enough from an original muff circuit has too much trouble cutting through. At least impo, and again: 'anything' doesn't include a shit ton of highly regarded boutique muffs I haven't tried. Bluebeard, pharaoh, wren&cuff, musket, supercollider, and a lot of others I read about online. I haven't given up on muffs yet, so lemme know what you end up with, I might just give it another try.

The Pharoah Supreme offers tons of flavors. While it has plenty of available low end, I wouldn't call it "metal" sounding. That said, the Pharoah sounds best to me running at high volume, really pushing an amp. And it stacks like a champ.

I love the Blunderbuss and Supercollider '71 as well but I feel they're more geared towards tighter, aggressive, and chugging tones.

@Schnikes, Does the Blunderbuss a lot different from the Musket.
I had a Musket and it was too velvety vor my taste.

The Blunderbuss is definitely nastier sounding than the Musket. I prefer the Blunderbuss, hands down.

I used to hate muffs, but then I realized that I hated them only because other people hated them. They are super useful and tweakable pedals.

I like the Box of War, very solid build, HUGE sound and can do both distortion and fuzz.

I really like the Sunnmachine Walkure. Thought it was great on passive bass especially and probably kicks ass on guitar.

DMB Bumble fuzz (seriously one of the absolute best voiced fuzzes ever)

It is muff based. You could also try Hair of the Dog which is a scaled down ECT.

TAFM should be considered. Not muff but definitely big and bassy. Sounds sweet on guitar.

Musket definitely has a bit of the jack-of-all-muff-trades, master-of-none thing going on. Schnikes is right--Blunderbuss is nasty in the best snarling-midrange kind of way possible, but the bottom end may be a little lacking for you.

Depending on how much gain vs. versatility you want, get a Pharaoh or LSTR and spend the time to get really familiar with how the tone-shaping controls work.

Big muff is the best circuit ever. If you want a tight punchy type look into the NYC-style supermuffs (I like the Supercollider the best out of those). The big wooly ones are the Sovteks, and the triangles/civil wars just sound "perfect -- Schlatte made me one for ILFSecret Satan which is fucking incredible -- but don't sound like what you're looking for here.

Heard great things about the LSTR and the Pharoah. Haven't tried either. Badascan en route, though, so I will have kind of tried both.
