Speaking of which, someone loan me your Mantic jams. I wanna know if the hype is justified. I have a DS-1 for trade. And a super overdrive. And a bass big muff pi.

But seriously, folks.

Mantic dudes sent Tom a Flex and I got to play with it for a bit. It's pretty nailed-to-the-wall-crazy. I wanna try the Pro.

It is so going to happen. If it happened to the Death Metal, Meatbox, Buzzbox and Gonkulator (more?) it will happen.

But for like $250, not $150.
Who did the Death Metal clone? I hadn't heard about that. Kind of curious

I met the Mantic guys at NAMM and got to try all of their pedals. I was extremely impressed by the whole line and will most definitely be picking up a Flex (or hopefully the Pro) soon. I really dug the variety of sounds and how versatile the controls are. It can most definitely be a freak-out fest if that's what you're feelin'...but it can also be reined-in to be more controllable. The Vitriol was sick on bass too.

I mean... at least it has input gain and a nicer switch/aesthetic, but you could probably buy a Death Metal and have it modded for an input gain control for $75 total. I should probably mod my Death Metal for an input gain control, I wonder how it'd sound...

The Gunkulator is just an awful, awful sounding pedal. I've had them offered to me in trade several times and I always pass. It just sounds bad IMO.

I love Mantic too. Those guys are super nice. Wish this was something cooler.

Plus ouch on the price.

Input gain on a death metal sounds great. The pedal is way more useable than it has any right to be.

The gonkulator is just a grunge with half the controls missing, and a ring mod fixed at 500hz. If it wasn't for that incubus guy I can't see them as having ever become famous.

It worked fairly poorly as a distortion, obviously, and the ring mod was just way too limited in its controls. The best use I found for it was setting it to (relatively) low gain and then using the mod to judiciously introduce some intermodulation. When done subtly it was a pretty nice lofi sound. I'm not sure why anyone would want to clone it - I think the price tag for a gonkulator reflects its particular collector value rather than a pursuit of a sound ideal (compared to say a Boss VB-2 which is a legitimately awesome vibrato and not just rare).

Shit, sorry to get all negative about new gear.

I remember when the gonkulator was starting to get hype, and it was partially because of the Incubus guy but also because at the time there were very limited options on the market for a ring modulator pedal. Today, there are a bunch with flexible options and nobody listens to Incubus, but I think the hype lives on because everyone forgot why it got popular in the first place.

Are we just ignoring the option that the Incubus guy could buy all 10?

Ask hbombgraphics! I modded mine a long time ago and sold it to him. Has good low gain sounds. You could also back off you guitar vol for similar effect of course.

So does the RP155, which is the only experience I have with one....and I...kinda like it
I mean, it is pretty useless in a conventional sense, but it was/is fun to play around with, especially blended with other things.
