I agree with this completely, but I just can't help but gas over over-complicated delays.

I use the Flashback x4 pretty extensively but use it primarily for looping. I don't mind the delay sounds but I also have an Abominable Effects Unholy Grail, an Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master and a Rainbow Machine (for the weird shit).

I think if you want most versatile and perhaps most feature laden and awesome Conky might be right on the money with the Eventide. Definitely more cheddar than any of the others but it probably sounds loads better, as well.

That said, the DL4 is the venerable favorite though that seems to be primarily as a looper. In that case... i prefer the TC due to the play once feature.

Yup.

I love the idea of big feature rich delays and the unique otherwise impossible sounds within. But I either find one sound and stick with it or spend all my time digging through menus going "neat-o", and ultimately feel like I've wasted time and money rather than playing the thing.

Of the OP's choices, I'd go delaylab. Sounds great, relatively inexpensive, definitely meets a general definition of versatile.

But I'd rather have multiple smaller single purpose delays. Maybe it's the limits of brain, but it's easier for me to see think and write around the individual pieces of hardware vs modes/menus/functions crammed into one pedal - and more often than not, those multiple smaller units will yield sounds not possible with a single larger unit.

When in doubt, just find one with tap tempo.

I love my TC X4. Way better than the Vox.

I guess I should add that, for me, the 1776 multiplex does everything I need.

Out of all the non digital delays I've had, the 1776 Multiplex was by far my fav and most versatile.

Well I found a JHS modded DL4 that a local guy is willing to straight trade for. Of course being your average JHS user he doesn't remember what mods were done (coughyouraverageworshipplayerisnotthatbrightcoughcough.) Seems to have the softswitches installed if the image is correct.

If that doesn't work out DoS/Skip's suggestion is best or the Ibanez es2 for a simple but versatile delay.

get a tube echoplex. fuck versatility

and fuck budgets

I have both, the carbon copy is on my pt mini for size alone, the Ibanez is an all around better delay with way cooler features. It stays on my bass board
