this probably isn't most people's kinda thing but i saw this group supporting deerhoof in daikanyama a few weeks ago, 6 teenage girls singing and dancing plus a 12-or-so piece ensemble including the guitarist from Hijokaidan just making noise non-stop. they are sort of sloppy but i liked it, total contrast to the normal perfectly choreographed pop idol stuff. so much damn fun.

also i will plug ENDON again because they're probably the most intense band i've ever seen play, and at the loudest venue
the first time i've had breathing difficulty simply because of the amount of bass energy in the room

i can't be fucked going to concerts locally any more. japanese musicianship, crowds, live houses, everything... in general is just... way better. there are always exceptions but in the end i've never felt more eager to escape my local music scene.

They are/were as Japanese as the post-rock band "We Are From Japan".

I never really got into Asobi Seksu much, but wasn't the vocalist Japanese? I also want to say they had a few songs with Japanese lyrics.

I love that video! I have one of their albums too, Papa's Ear, I like it but don't listen to it often. But that video; it's one of those that I forget about for a few months, then suddenly remember out of nowhere and watch it excitedly everyday for a week, then forget about again for a while.
Most of the Japanese stuff I listen to is probably not be what the OP is after, but I'll post some Soutaisei Riron anyways, because I'm in love with Etsuko Yakushimaru.

I'm amazed no one has mentioned Flower Travellin' Band. Hearing them changed my entire approach to guitar.

Takeshi Terauchi started as a surf/instro guitarist, but evolved his sound into something really unique by the early 70s. Surf, psychedelia, prog, and Japanese traditional melodies all woven together. 2:50 in this track =

Yellow Magic Orchestra are the least known most influential band I can think of. They pioneered the use synthesizers and music technology from their inception, using their diverse (and classically trained since childhood in the case of Ryuichi Sakamoto) backgrounds to create some really innovative music that for the most part holds up today. That and they perfected writing some of the most earworm-y melodies I've ever heard. My current band actually closes our set with a cover of this one:

That reminds me, The Surf Coasters are awesome.
And they use Yamaha SG/SB type guitars...

RIGHT?
Cruyff in the Bedroom hasn't been mentioned yet. Nice Japanese shoegaze; the vocals aren't always the strongest, but are pleasant enough.
