Whenever I think of an effect that seems like it is assigned to a specific genre, I put reverb or delay before that effect and wee what happens.

You could also use an envelope filter as a synthy cutoff/resonance filter control if you can eliminate the attack. Weird EQ distortion sounds.

Into fuzz, after delay/verb, with the sensitivity set super low so it rarely triggers (only really works well if you can switch the frequency range to get more interesting static filters), with a really slow attack playing nice clean chordy things, can get quite phaser-y. I do all sorts of non-funk stuff with mine! Love it.

I'm using my Xero DLX in the same context as some can use a chorus.

I don't know how the Q Tron works and sounds, but you can try to use it as a cock wah effect before a dirt pedal to achieve the "Money for Nothing" sound.
