for what it's worth, i had a 5150 for years and i think it's a good high gain head. loud as hell. gets a lot better with good tube choices too. i have no gas for one anymore, but i had my time in the sun with one and it served me really well.
Yeah -- here's the thing on all this. The prices are great. If you have the funds you should buy it. I think misterstomach was saying how much he liked the 5150 for Blackened stuff and I can totally see that working really well. No pedals. Just straight into the 5150 and tweaking to make it sound like Varg in some Norwegian forest.

When it comes to that typical metalcore/death metal sound you get out of the 5150... well I can't stand it. I went to a really sweet fest this summer and it was a lot of shared gear and/or bands using 5150s. I just really didn't care for the sound of it.

Yea thanks for the input guys. I went ahead and pick it up yesterday under the assumption that if I end up hating the head at least I got a great cab for cheap. So far I'm liking the head overall though.

My first tube amp was a 5150 combo, I'd still like to have a 5150 head again some day, they're loud, brutal and fucking cut.
