Yeah, this would be a very, very good option. I have their FY2 clone and it's really good. And their stuff doesn't cost that much.

If you want two separate boxes you could go the BYOC way with the superfuzz. I have a vintage Ibanez Standard Fuzz (a superfuzz with a slightly different gain stage) that I love, but the BYOC Leeds Fuzz sounds so good and can be tweaked, that I think I might have to build one.

You could literally name a fuzz off the top of your head. IT's somewhere in his pedal archive. Or it's in the mail on its way to him.

As far as your query, they are both pretty distinct in their sounds so if you like them both go for either one. I had a vintage FY-2 for a while but my Dirge version absolutely destroyed it for half the price. Unless you're a collector I'd go with a clone/updated version of one of the circuits.

General ILF rule of thumb - if you need something, ask Dirge to build it. He could probably even make you a 2 in 1 type pedal. He should probably make the Super Companion 2 in 1 as part of his regular line!

FY2+FY6=fuzz 8 my brain!!!

I've had a couple of clones, my favourite is still my univox. They all sound very close, I think the octave is subtler or something, it glitches less on complex chords and has a bit of extra clank for when you get percussive... it flubs out less? You can almost palm mute. My standard fuzz is warmer sounding. Always puts me in a fu manchu kind of mood.

The fy-6 is probably my favourite fuzz. If i had to have one. It'd be that.

ha ha ha - sorry, I didn't see your response until now. Yeah, the originals would be a bit pricey. I was talking more about clones - we've got some great builders here, and I've gotten some excellent remakes of unobtainable pedals through the Shark Tank and DIY sections.

Yeah, I was exaggerating a bit to make my point, and I totally agree about the vintage mojo thing.

Still, for the average guitarist who's not also a collector, imo the advantages of a slightly different sounding vintage FY-6 don't weigh up agains the lower price, warranty and customer support, of something like a Wattson FY-6

I'd personally just opt for the BYOC Leeds fuzz, since board real estate is sort of an issue for me.

Probably my 2 favourite fuzzes. I've tried 3rd party and self-built clones and they don't cut like the original FY2. They get more compressed and are less articulate in the higher frequencies. No idea why cos I've built one with vintage correct parts (except the 2sc536f - I tried a whole load of old si in there) and it still fell short, so as far as I can tell it's the transistors. Volume drop is very small on most of the FY2s I've had and can be compensated for with a simple booster in the tail pipe.

My homemade fy6 gets closer to my original but I still prefer the vintage unit - it has something more characterful and natural sounding about it, can't describe it any better than that. FY6s I've had go further than unity on the volume pot. They can do spaghetti western leads on lower gain settings.

The clones are good though and you'll be very happy with them until you get to play through an original.

The one question I think that could help is will you be playing anything more complex than a 5th chord through it? The Superfuzz gets clangy and discordant with much more than a major barre whereas the FY2 will take it, especially if you roll back your guitar volume a bit. This does tend promote the lower strings, so you need to adjust your playing if you want to hear the top 3.

I still have yet to play through any fuzz with any kind of 'vintage mojo.' I just don't buy it at all and I'll happily stick to my assumption and save shit-tons of money

I have to say that I'm a big fan of clones. Only because I'm not chasing any other guitarists tone, so the sound I can get out of whatever pedal is more than good enough for me. So long as it sounds decent, then I'm happy. Also I probably couldn't afford the original pedal and mojo is for the blooze lawyers.

i thought mojo was for the hipsters...i'm always getting these things confused. People with things I can't afford. I'd just assume call them all that.
