The best sounding pedal compressor I ever tried was the FMR ARC, but I sold it when I needed some cash. They occasionally turn up used, but are kind or pricey new. They work with line level signals too, so it's a useful recording piece as well as a pedal.

If you are not worried about a pedal, the DBX163 is one of the great used compressor bargains. They have and instrument input with a gain control, and they also sound good.

I like the diamond too. I like mine on bass with the EQ switched out but on guitar with the EQ on.
