I've never had problems with noise when all my pedals were off.
Noise gates were more useful to me when I had a one-channel amplifier and primarily used single coils. But now I use modelers and decided hey, fuck single coils.

Re: What do we think about noise reduction type peds?
On the rare occasion I've wanted it, it's a light amount and I have it in the rack. It can get rid of little very annoying things sometimes that nothing else will, but I've found that being judicious with levels and having quiet clean before hitting the wall of mean helps.
Wouldn't pay money for a standalone unless I was in a speed metal band and wanted to simplify things.
Neither of which is likely to happen any time soon, let me tell you.
That said, if I was buying one, I'd go with something relatively expensive and adjustable and worked with my particular rig - this isn't a case of 'one size fits all' in the slightest as the type/nature of the thing you're eliminating varies pretty substantially.

I've read that with a non-trivial hack you can make a Boss noise gate pedal into a Slow Gear.Ro_S wrote:some noise gate pedals can do a Slow Gear type thing.

i used to do the NS-2. it does stop hiss/ and hum from high gain pedals.
it also kills Natural note decay. and adds a shitty high end sheen ( boss BUFFFERR )
I liked it for killing that static .. when not playing.
that's it.
i've been Way happy .. just clicking off certain high gain pedals/ channels when not playing.
other options these Gentlemen suggest - are much better.
