This.

My first synth was a Nord 2X and I think that was even too much of a hidden mystery menu for a newbie.

I sold my Nord very soon after getting a very simple synth, a MicroMoog. Pretty comparable to the SubPhatty.

I remember that to me at the time it had so many knobs that presented every possibility and there were no presets so I had to learn what every single knob position would mean to the overall sound.

I think I have grown out of it by now, but I would definitely recommend going the route of having a synth where you can make every sound without having to just modify a preset sound.

My first synth was Minibrute. It has knob-per-function layout and since there are no presets you are forced to experiment and play with all the controls. I still have it and it's still a lot of fun to play with. Although I would probably went in another direction if I had to gig, the lack of presets would be a deal breaker.

I like synths to sound more atmospheric and less like keyboards (i.e. The Final Countdown). So I would pair a Waldorf Blofeld w/keys for ambient with a Moog Minitaur for bass. You could probably get both used for around $1200 or under.

Thanks for reminding me that kids coming up and hitting 2P start for sudden fights at MK cabinets will never happen again.

Holy shit. Learned tonight that my son plays on the same soccer team (6 year olds) as the son of one of the guys who does Moog's advertising design. After a very unexpectedly cool conversation he offered to find out if he can help me out in finding a good price on a new board. Hmmm

Interesting. I think what I like about it (aside from the sound) was how immediate it is. All of the controls it has on hand are powerful and have a purpose. The super saw wave has such a great character. Yeah, other synths have this wave, but the JP8K is the original.

Ugh I love that sound. Do you know this from a live video or was there an article that talked about the gear they used?
