So does the EQ section actually do anything or are the pots just there to add to the cost?

The Elements was not really working for me personally. I generally don't like all the tweaking options. Also I don't think it will do any of the crazier stuff you mentioned

Elements can get close to an HM-2. It won't get exactly like an HM-2 because it has a mid hump at two frequencies, whereas you have to choose a frequency and run with it in the elements. It won't get you anywhere near an fz-2 though. A dominator won't get you near either. Best bet is to get an fz-2 and an HM-2 if you're after those sounds. The circuits are so disparate I'd be surprised if anything could do both.

But get a dominator anyway cos they are awesome. There is little overlap between the okko and The Elements, so get both. And an HM-2. And an fz-2. Then turn them on at the same time and create a small tear in space-time.

I've owned the FZ-2 a few times, but I always end up selling it for practicality's sake. If something breaks down on my board, I want something that is immediately and readily available. Same reason I'm sketchy on buying a used HM-2.

It wouldn't need to nail those tones exactly, just get in that territory. A high-gain distortion that handles dissonant chords and harmonics in the way that an HM-2 does (Think Slint, Polvo, MBV) and a fuzz that can approximate an FZ-2's mode 2 sticky octave fuzz.

I've legit never experienced a boss pedal breaking.

I have, at least once, maybe more. Luck of the draw I guess. I have nothing bad to say about their durability. They're very road-worthy. it's just that I really try to only have current production effects on my board for utility's sake. As a personal preference, I'm really iffy about having rare, expensive, older second-hand, or out-of-production effects on my board. If something breaks down, I want to reliably have a replacement ready to order. All but two of my effects are mass-produced, one is modded, and none would be trouble to replace (or find a substitute for) in a pinch.

It gives me peace of mind, but that's just my approach.

..And I don't mean to speak ill of boutique stuff either. I love it, I just can't afford most of it right now.
