You have any soundclips of that beast? I'm interested to hear it. I like the look of those old peaveys. The black and silver metal look is sweet. I had a f-800 for about two minutes before I sold it and got a sunn concert bass.

The more i play this thing the more i love it. It does look like the power lamp was jiggled loose during shipment because i just noticed it blinks with higher volumes. It doesnt do anything to the sound so im not sure i care at all, plus hey.............its like having a tiny light rig right????

This is a few months old but hey, I want to immortalize my Vulcan in one of the threads that convinced me to snag it. I bought this Vulcan from the crappy local music store. The guy told me it's an early 70's model, somewhere between 1972 and 1973. It goes down to 2 ohms but I only run it at 4 through my 4x12. Still don't really know the wattage. I've heard 250 I've heard 500 I've heard 100. I'd say around 250. This one's a little different from most I've seen on the web. Mine has weird biker gang font and says Series 400cw up top. Most others have boxed techno lookin font and say Series 500. Not really sure there's any difference other than mine goes down to 2 ohms.

It'd been sitting there forever (at least a few years, it was shoved all the way in a corner) and I figured it was broken when I first tried it. About 6 months later I tried it again and realized it was just really crackly. Bought it, cleaned it up, sold my Yamaha G100 and then it died a few months later so I had it restored by some crazy old guy fixing amps out of a business hotel.

I had him put in a standard jewel lamp and redo all the caps. Also got a 3 prong plug to replace the absolutely terrifying 2 prong held together by a gigantic wad of what looked like glue. Hooray! No more shocks!

It came with a footswitch but I never got that fixed. The reverb and tremolo work but the fuzz isn't switched on. One of these days I'll do the bridge thing on the connections to get it going, but for now boxidizer + civil war muff clone are enough dirt to keep me happy. There are a lot of weird quirks I've noticed with this amp. Just noticed the other week that the Hi input seems to have more midrange to it than the Lo input or at least less bass.

Hopefully I provided a little info for anyone trying to find anything on these weird old amps. If I ever find another I'd probably snag it. If you're looking for something that sounds similar I'd say it's pretty similar to the other old peavey solid state heads (400 series, 300 series). 300 series especially. Same layout and options (fuzz, trem, verb) but less cool looking and no footswitch as far as I know.

SWEEEEEEET HOT BABY CHEESUS!!!! That makes 8 of them that I know of in existance.

As the finder of the first vulcan to reemerge from the depths, ill say welcome to the club!!!

Yours is a later model maybe 70-73...since it has the 400 series power module, the earlier ones had the 500 series power module good for 250 watts at 4 ohms and were not 2 ohm capatable...yours, like the musician and bass 400s, prolly puts out 210 watts at 2 ohms.

As I tell all vulcans owners, and I know all of them...if you ever want to sell, DIBS. Ill give it a good home.
