get an attenuator or if you don't care about tube overdrive, a volume pedal. I use a Boss GT-10 and have my dirt in it's effects loop, with a verllen 100 watt, a Simms watts 100 watt and a sunn 1200s i can turn down to the point where it does not wake up the wife.

As much as I want to keep the Twin, it's a size issue as well as a volume one. I've looked into attenuators and the like, but it doesn't stop it from being a bit of a lump with castors and a case on.

Better to sell or trade in for a Deluxe Reverb or Vibrolux.

I would sell the Twin, and take the money and put it towards a smaller, good quality amp.
I actually did the same thing a number of years ago.
I went from a Twin Reverb down to a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (the 1x12 combo, very portable) and a Blackstar Artisan 15

Never looked back. The Twin was backbreaking, even with castors.
Ive gigged with both the Hot Rod and the Blackstar with no issues.
Clean headroom is better on the Hot Rod as you would expect, but the quality, both construction and sound, is superior on the Blackstar.

YMMV.
IF you want Fender clean sound though, it makes sense to stay with Fender.
Id check out a HotRod and put the change you should get towards pedals, food, meth or a small bedroom amp.

That's what I'm thinking. Even the 2x12 DeVille is a featherweight compared to the Twin, and more compact. If I get an attenuator (or a volume pedal), I can see it doing me nicely. Since he's putting money into the trade as well, I think it'll be me sorted. I might invest in something little like a Yamaha THR10 too - there's one in a local Cash Converters and I've only heard good things.

Hot Rod Deluxe is about as small as I'd go with what you're describing.

Deville will do the job as well but it's still a big, big amp.

(I have a HRD around for happy BF-ish cleans and it's a fine companion even at apartment volumes providing I watch it).

A good attenuator will cost you almost as much as a practice amp imo. But if you really want to switch to one all-purpose amp that's not as heavy and loud as a twin, and still can hold it's own in a band...

The hot rod deluxe might be a good choice, especially if you've got peds to make up for the amp's meh onboard distortion.

Like others said: There's few amps out there that fall in that 'inbetween' category of lightweight amps that can do loud cleans. They're not super clean at really high volumes, but maybe try an ac15 if you haven't already?

Dispite its 22watt, the deluxe reverb I got for exactly the same purposes, could't cut it at rehearsels. As in, it sounded pretty good cranked, but it stopped sounding remotely clean with the volume halfway.

That's imo where the Fender HR series shines, though money whise I'd personally first look at the peavey classic 30. Not that they're super lightweight or anything though...

HRD drive channel isn't something I'd want to live with for eternity but it's an option that works sometimes and doesn't hurt me when it's not used.

I use the thing though 99% of the time in clean (and have tubes that WILL NOT break up at any volume short of getting arrested).

I agree with this.
I used to have a DeVille and traded it for an ac15, and I loved the ac15 waaaaay more.
I don't really like the Hot Rod series that much, they don't have too much character.

Exactly why I love them, I have pedals and a whole rack for character.

Vox and I have never gotten along.

I would love to, but I have a Laney VC30 that needs the reverb pot fixing and I can barely afford that repair. I mean, I'd offer that as a trade but I'd need to offer some serious cash on top of it and I doubt it's what you're after (it does sound great though- better than my bandmates upgraded Hot Rod). Funnily enough I'm lusting after a blue junior atm! Cleans can suck it.
