Try a Blower Box too. Ive heard nothing but good things and that price cant be beat. You can probably find one on Talkbass for sale, cause they cant handle the raunch.

Mini does a lot. Hence the love.

I think you have more than enough input to figure it out though. Definitely play with your eq and make sure you learn that before you forward dough for a pedal. I really think your distortion desires based upon your description are within the valve state.

Crank mids. Enough treble to let some clackity clack through the mix. Bass to taste.

Good suggestions. It's absurdly common practice to not learn tone shaping with eqs. Definitely opens up possibilities.

I never used to be able to understand why i couldn't be heard in a full mix. Then Native and La Dispute played a show at my house and we opened (/brag). After we warmed up, the bassist from Native asked if he could tweak my eq. He showed me the power of the mids.

LOL. I told my pal in Powerslop the same thing. "Think of the Mids like Volume. Do you want to turn the damn volume down in the main part where your guitar is heard?". He uses mids now.

I had a decent sound using a muff and a tonebender/ fuzzface, but I know after dude gets a decent cheap amp he's going to want a fuzz or distortion.

[sneaking over to TalkBass... Gear boner for one of them Blower Boxes!]

It better!

Kinda just ordered one last week. I'm already drowning in fuzz peds, but I wanted to find out for myself what the hype's all about. And I'm sorta short of a pedlol that can get me in high gain territory without going nuts in a scrambly octave-y way or a noisy glitchy oscillating way:)
