I remember some old guy I met once saying that the 60s had a lot of shitty pop, not just the rock 'n roll that is remembered. That's kinda the point, you/we don't remember the crap, just the good stuff.

That's one side of it. The other is innovation. Rock has already been done. It's still incredibly awesome when new rock music appears, but it will never have the revolutionary quality as the first rock music. The same goes for other genres. So do you guys think there will come about a new kind of music in our immediate future, or will it be rehashing of rock, metal and hip-hop? Not that I think that's a bad thing; for instance the Beatles aren't around anymore, so it's a good thing that new bands are picking up their "vibe" and showing it to a new generation.

On another note, I do agree that the new access to music is a good thing. I've never been a fan of star culture and celebrities, so the underground angle suits me. So while we don't have massive rock stars earning millions of dollars, we do have cool, relatively successful rock artists (like Japandroids or Cloud Nothings or [insert whatever band you like]).

Also, you can argue about the relative merits of lowering the barrier of entry into essential non-existence, but remember -- if you don't dig it, don't listen to it. Quite Easily Done.

I guess my topic was made more out of boredom to see what people would say. I just feel like I'm alone sometimes, but I can't relate to a lot of the new music out there. I need to expand my horizons, but don't know where to start. Does this mean I'm getting old? Sigh.

some other hurdles:

A) There is so much music that you have yet to hear that's already been made
B) Your heroes are going to list older records that moved them, not newer ones

You should just stay plugged into avenues that you know will be rewarding. 'Trade tapes' with people who have overlapping but not identical tastes. Lurk in the what are you listening to thread. Go to a record store and drop ten bucks on an album with a cool cover from a band you don't know. etc. It's like Oblique Strategies for your ears, 'nah mean?

WUT? U DONT LISTEN TO THE WALKER BROTHERS OR THE LETTERMEN OR 50'S ACAPELLA BANDS OR TODD RUNGREN OR PAT BENATAR OR THE HANSONS?

Every decade has ten tonnes of shit-music to wade through. Every time period has a huge push towards musical conformity and people trying to market whatever the THING is for whenever they are. You just have to remember that and look for music you enjoy.

Just do what D.o.S. says. It's pretty much what I do, but I also mine the past for music that I'm not very familiar with (which in reality is most of it. )

The 90's had so much shit.... Len, Pearl Jam, The Spin Doctors, an Anthrax even shittier than the original (and Anthrax sucks regardless....), Billy Joel River of Dreams, that fucking FRIENDS song, Presidents of the USA, the Barenaked Ladies, Oasis, Eric Clapton Unplugged, Alanis Morisette, No Doubt, Blind Mellon, Counting Crowes, Sheryl Crowe.....

And emocore, sweatercore, moshcore, screamo..... plus terrible slam death metal, Metallicas Black Album and everything after it....

MAYBE the worst decade for music ever with a handful of good bands? Plus you had Devil Sticks, plaid pyjamas as pants, The Beastie Boys (I mean let's get fucking real hear amirite?), The Prodigy (fucking christ), The Cranberries, Sinead Oconnor, U2's Achtung Baby, Lisa Loeb....

My god.... I need an asprin. I think I just gave myself ass cancer from thinking about all these bands.....

You can stop right there, motherfucker.

This explains a lot.

The 90s were a time when you were most impressionable. That's why you thing it "was some of the most influential shit ever".

You're less open to influences now.

Dude. The Wickerman.

The 90s were dark AF though. So much of the music I like from then if I listened to it now I would be like WHAT IS THIS GARBAGE? I was listening to Bloodlet's entheogen on the way to work this morning. Metalcore? WITH FRETLESS BASS?! But nope, in the 90s that shit was innovative to my 17 year old ears.

But yeah like, the last 60 years of popular music give or take have been white guys with guitars or some variation thereof. When something stagnates for that long innovation probably isn't going to come from there for a while.

And for ever Miley you have now (and I'd argue in terms of shock and controversy it's people like her that are the Alice Cooper of the current time), well, there was New Kids on the Block, East 17, Britney...

Great tune. But from 2000. Nu Maiden is fucking great. Even Priest are doing good things with Nostradamus and Angel Of Retribution.

I literally want to kill you right now. I can't believe...god damn it.

OK first off! Fuck almost all those bands you named!

Second, here is why the 90's were great.

1.Kool Keith, yes, not rock but did a song with Prodigy in the fucking 90's. Also Dr. Octagon. FUCK!
2. Nine Inch Nails...no need to say more.
3. Sublime. Seriously awesome shit.
4. Opeth (Orchid, Morningrise! COME ON!)
5. The Red Hot fucking Chili Peppers. This is when they were bad mother fuckers. That and the late 80's.
6. Type O Negative. I am a HUGE Type O fan. The 90's was some of their best music.
7. Stabbing Westward. Yes, I fucking loved them. Perfect emotional destruction music.
8. Kool Keith. Again! THAT'S RIGHT!!!!!
9. Tool. Some of Tool's greatest stuff came out in the 90's as well.
10. Rage Against the Machine. Can you remember the raw energy. The kick you in the nuts energy??

Ok, so obviously I'm biased because I was born in 82 and started appreciating music more and more in the 90's. I still loved Ozzy, Run DMC, Ice T...shit like that when I was younger. But the 90's always make me happy to think about, musically. Fuck everything else from that decade. Hah.

To each there own. It's cool. I just enjoyed the music more then.

I was born in 81 and have always absolutely loathed tool, the chilli peppers, sublime, type o negative, stabbing westward, and opeth, so...taste is a weird thing huh?

Also no shit did not know the wickerman was 2000.
