Not a fan of the Boss SP-XXX sound. They're sterile and boring.
I'm into samplers with interesting coloration and textures when detuning. Mostly 12bit anything by E-MU, Korg, Akai, Ensoniq, Yamaha.

They're more $, have limited memory and on-board effects, and most of all those machines require some chops and will help you develop technique and an ear.
MPC60 is my favorite to use, SP-1200 is my favorite to hear.

Everything you sample with them suddenly sounds *better* AFAIC...even if you're going for the lowest of lofi sound.

Don't want to sound like I'm discounting your input offhand -- but that those are some out-of-my-price-range for the time being setups.

Also, didn't Dilla made Donuts on a 303?

(Which is basically the equivalent of saying "yeah but the Beatles only used 4 tracks.")

Yeah, Madlib is an SP-303 user as well. But on Madvillainy he used an SP-1200 (whew!)

You can typically find these for under $100:

I think they have a better sound than the new SPs.
Also I've been seeing MPC 2000s go for under $300. Seriously :whoa:

If you cant afford that right now, deprive yourself a little longer and save up the extra rupees.

w/ the fx and resampling, u can get the sp.'s to rival that lofi sound of the sp1200/mpc60. maybe not exactly the same, but yea.

also a bit cheaper, u can look at those old akai samplers, s900/s950, s612, etc. same 12 bit engine as the 60.

That's significantly less than my cursory poking around. I'll keep my eyes peeled for sure.

Don't belittle me too hard, Rusty, but I found a pretty sweet local deal on a 303.

I hope we can still be friends.

Also, vid, I snagged one for less than 3 bills with the supply + memory card: Ebay prices seem to put that package right around 3 hundred, though.

nice dude! 303 has the best sound to my ears. make use of those lofi/long sampling modes!!!

a sidetip, u can power your sp from a 1spot. i've had like 3 or 4 plus a bunch of pedals all on at the same time w/o any issuesss!

oh and even tho the max memory card size advertised is 64mb, u can use a 128mb and double up on your sample time on banks C/D
