I recently acquired an FZ-2 and I'm really glad I did. It suits me, I dig it, but it is not going to be for everyone.
What's really strange is I'm not the biggest fan of supafuzz variants when they're straight up, but this thing is (as others have said) a bit of a monster. Kind of like the black-listed, estranged, wild-child cousin of the family.
So, if you wanna go balls to the wall, get one.
If you wanna hang onto your HM-2, try stacking it with some other stuff (maybe some BAT stuff, like the BF, Pharaoh, revelation) see how you go. Those pedals love to be stacked with and they really open up a whole world of "holy shit, did not know my gear could sound like Satan's sweet vaginal honey".
When I got my FZ-2 I thought it was pretty gnarly in its own right, but as soon as I ran it into my Black Forest, I was in the aforementioned territory, so I strongly suggest stacking any legendary Boss pedal you are a bit "meh" about.

Also, its been mostly me talking up the FZ-2 lately (I'm still nailing this bitch hard through the honeymoon period) so I apologise if I've been a one man hype machine.
My plan is to drive prices through the roof, sell mine, and get a custom one built with hand-wired magic mojo, gooped to fuck.

The other day when I was jamming I was running my HM-2 full tilt and stacking (warning: this combination is retarded [if any mentally handicapped people are reading this, I formally apologize]) Blue Box>Whammy 5 (sub-octave)>POG (all octaves)>IC Muff>HM-2 and it literally sounded like the end of man
If I was using a bass amp I wouldn't be alive to tell the tale.
Unfortunately I only found great use in making stupid loud sounds with the HM-2 and I already agreed to the trade. I just got my Superfuzz today (thanks Jero!) and while it is great, I don't get much upper octave outta it. I like it a lot but it's not as evil sounding as I thought it would be. If the FZ-2 crushes dreams and melts faces I will be happy.
I can always get another HM-2 at one of the local pawn shops.

I got the best octave with the small knob just right of center, and fuzz to taste. Also, greatly depends on your playing style. Try some high register note bends.

I can guarantee that the end of man sounds like an attackless-square-wave-wall-of-green-shit that makes you periodically lose hearing in your left ear for days afterwards.

I won't say it was the heaviest toanz I've heard, but it was definitely the wall of shittiest.

I found that If I turn the gain down and put it first in the chain I got much more pronounced octave. Still learning the ropes of it. I really love the footswitchable tone.

I should be getting the FZ-2 this week. I will report back once I have it.

I too had an FZ-2 and a Wattson FY-6, and man, it was no contest. And then over time, I've also owned several other super fuzzes, and similar pedals (SS/BS Super Puzzle, ZVEX Octane 3, Roland Bee Baa, modded FM-2 to be way louder and angry, a Bee Baa clone, probably a few others) and nothing compared to the FZ-2 in terms of sheer ballsiness and volume. For a little while I owned two FZ-2s. Kiiiinda want one again.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Super Fuzz I got from Jero, but I'm using that on my wannabe Ratatat board, the FZ-2 will be set to destroy on my two-man-band-hella-octaves-fuck-shit-up board.

Me too, and it seems that the FZ-2 has more lows and volume of the other Superfuzz clones. Only the Prescription Electronics Depht Charge could be a real alternative, plenty of volume, gain and with a really cool blend knob. But the Hyper Fuzz is cheaper, smaller and its boost mode is really wonderful.

I too used an FZ-2 in a two-man hella-esque project. None of the other fuzz boxes I tried got quite the same monstrous insane apocalyps sound. Forget about muffs, superfuzz clones, fuzz faces, tonebenders...As awesome as those can sound, they'll always sound like great fuzz pedals, not like stupid loud sonic weapons.

I'm sure there's plenty of similar boutique alternatives though, but a) I don't know of any, and b) it'll cost ya more.

The mastortron comes to mind, in terms of extreme low end and overal insane aggression, but in a whole other way as the FZ-2.

I used mine in an stereo rig with a bass half stack and a big ass guitar half stack, on a way downtuned baritone. Regardless of how sucky my riffs might have been, my tone could've raised the dead and whipe out a small village.

You have described the rig I am currently trying to migrate towards.....for a two-piece band....as well.....

2-piece bands are so in right now! My bass rig is currently in a different city so I will have to use my crummy-assed car to go get it next time I have a weekend off.

I also wanna go on record saying that we are not Hella-inspired, but rather that we (I) use hella octaves. If I had to use bands to describe our sound (so far) it would be more in the Giraffes? Giraffes! Or Cleft side of things.

My IC Muff is my main dirt for standard big riffs, a Rat for lighter stuff, Blue Box for Atari/weirdness, and the Hyper Fuzz will be for full-on sonic-awfulness.
