Yeah, well, he didn't totally kill my tone... and he was the guy who booked the club... so I let discretion be the better part of valor that day.
I hear you on pro sound people - I used to work concert crew in college, and we were only there for setup. The sound was run by a pro audio company who did things like tour support for touring bands, and live sound for jazz festivals in New Orleans - those guys were GOOD. There's a world of difference between someone who had to apprentice and train for years for the position, and the average dope pushing faders at a local club. Don't get me wrong - every now and then you'll get someone who knows what they're doing, but they're usually the exception to the rule around here.
OH, WAIT - I amend my earlier statement about never having a soundguy take the time to listen to me. The one time my band got to play at the Iron Horse, in Northampton, MA - that soundguy was FANTASTIC. Took his time getting everything right, didn't try to mess with us, didn't give us guff. Got a great house sound, and a great monitor sound (that's a WHOLE separate rant), with time to spare before the show.
Of course, then the booking guy tried to screw us out of our money for the show, and when I insisted on us being paid what he had told us he'd pay, he told me that was the last time we'd play there (

)... oh, well...
