In addition to lots here I already agree with, here are the clearest cut ones off the top of my head.

The Breeders: Last Splash > Pod
Elvis Costello: This Year's Model > My Aim Is True
The Cure: Seventeen Seconds > Three Imaginary Boys

I think what Doctor X said is a really good point. Sure they could have spent ages honing the songs off their first album, but the perceived freedom to experiment with writing (not that this is always the case!), the extra time to record the album itself, and maybe just a firmer idea of a good direction to go in can work wonders. Sometimes as with The Cure a band's first album can just be really, really different to everything they do later for some reason.

I agree with this actually!
Only thing is I wish they played more arranged stuff, since i love the themes, but hate the endless repetavive noodling of McLaughlin.

Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
HUM - You'd Prefer An Astronaut
Lush - Split
Meat Puppets - II
North - Ruins
Outkast - ATLiens
Pixies - Doolittle
Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles
Slint - Spiderland
Slowdive - Souvlaki
Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising
The White Stripes - De Stijl
Unwound - The Future Of What

Some [ahem] corrections...
MBV - Isn't Anything (Loveless is the third)
and Stooges S/T is the best in their catalog

Like you tried to just pass off Surfer Rosa as inferior to Doolittle.

But Come on Pilgrim's the best anyway.

Surfer Rosa isn't technically inferior...it's great, but lacks a song where it became necessary to give dat lip-sync middle finger.

Seeing as how I started this thread, I am pretty sure that makes my opinion more valid than anyone elses. Please correct me if wrong however.

Rush - Caress Of SteelRock[/quote]

Fly By Night was the second Rush album. I'm more of a Hemispheres/Farewell to Kings kinda guy, but I'd still pick the first or second over Caress of Steel.... :excellent:

Genesis (their first record doesn't really count) Nursery Cryme > Trespass

Throbbing Gristle 2nd Annual Report over 1st Annual Report

Judas Priest: Sad Wings of Destiny over Rocka Rolla

Metallica: Ride the Lightning over Kill em All

Black Flag: My War over Damaged

Bolt Thrower: Realm of Chaos over In Battle

In Solitude: TWTFTD over 1st LP

I second those that pick Stooges S/T over subsequent records. The first one is their masterpiece.

I'm comfortable making this statement.

I'd even say Slip It In is as good or better than My War
