If you do keep an eye out, you can still find deals. 370s pop up used for around $400-ish from time to time. And 140s/150s are rarely expensive at all.

It's a decent amp, I just hate that it blends the gain channel with the clean channel when there isn't a footswitch plugged into it, so it's really only sometimes clean for me. I really don't want to have to have a footswitch around just to be able to use the clean channel. That's annoying.

You could hardwire a jack to a default setting you like--just plug it in and leave the switch at home. You'll have to figure out what's closed and what's open. (For my Boogie preamp's tip-sleeve switching jacks, a Philips head screwdriver will do it in a pinch. You might get lucky with that working for yours.)

Look for the Laney GH50L or GH100L. Cleaner than the aor series, killer with pedals. One channel sweet od or crazy high gain and everything in between. Same price range as the aor amps on the used market.

Second the Acoustic ss amps. Randall ss amps have hell loud cleans too. I keep my Cyclone for the clean more than the uberstortion channel they're known for.

In both your required list of stuffs and budget, consider a Jazz Chorus. Loud, clean, stupid (and usually cheap), and will get you straight into the typical shoegaze stuff.

Won't be a head unless you get really lucky (the JC heads are not exactly common)...but the 2x12 or even the 1x12s get dumbass loud.

Eh... the traynors I've seen around here are usually REALLY overpriced. I've only seen one cool oddball fender and the guy removed the ad the next day. It was a Fender 75 for like $300. Some kind of weird tube amp of theirs from the early 80s.

Did they make red knob heads? I've only seen combos pop up now and then.

Where's "around here" for you? Here, in everything overpriced NYC, I'm still seeing Traynor's on CL around $500. Often less - I got mine, with matching cab, in the fall for $350.

They did make Red Knob heads. The Dual Showman, essentially a poor dudes modern Twin in a headshell, 100W switchable to 25w, or 50w/12w if you pull tubes. There was also a head version (possibly more than one, I remember one in a traditional headshell and one in some sort of metal monolithic rack mount box) of the Super/Super 60 circuit as well.

I live near Detroit. deals on craigslist are either very far away or gone the next day. I almost got to trade a guy for a JC-120 but it's too far of a drive for me to plan out anytime soon. Oh well. I'm not much into combos anyways. Especially a JC-120 with no casters.

I've wanted to try a Sovtek ever since seeing that the bass player used one. I thought they were just Marshalls under those sweet shells, though?

Well, I got a new amp today. It's a Yamaha G100 head. I was reeeaaallly diggin the clean tones out of it so my friend bought it and I traded him my Marshall. He's a god damn saint. But he'd been wanting my Marshall anyways so we're both happy. This head's in really good condition and everything's working fine on it so I'm happy.

Also, on the Peavey Vulcan, I tried it out. Unfortunately it must've been broken because the footswitch to use the effects wouldn't work. It was really crackly but pretty fuckin loud. Honestly, the tone was pretty bland. I think the Peavey Standard sounds a hell of a lot clearer than the Vulcan.

Depends on which one. The 100's are Marshalls, I think the 60's are Fender based.

IIRC, the MIG 60 has cascaded gain along with its EL-34s, so about as Marshall as the MIGs get. The 50 is like a Bassman, but it's like the Bassman that Marshall copied and honestly gives more of a Marshall feel than a tweed Bassman feel.
