Truth. I don't even use it as a distortion all the time. Some times its a cleanish boost, or an EQ for my other pedals

So much this. I was about to buy a second Elements until Ryan brought back the Cleanness which I use for low gain and boosting. And more EQ'ing if need be.
Does the Cleanness sound exactly like the low gain side of The Elements?

A little less gain on tap with the Cleanness but it drives my amps wonderfully. The Elements in low gain mode with diodes out setting and gain dialed back is pretty much the Cleanness exactly. It won't get as crunchy as Elements in low gain but most my low gain tones are coming from my amps anyway and the Cleanness can boost or drive those amp tones way harder. It's like adding an extra drive channel.
Cleanness also does the chiming sparkly boost very well. Like a Super Hard On with far more control. Or you can de-gain a high gain channel. Very useful pedal.

My favorite heavy distortion is the Okko Dominator. You could find a used one in your price range.
