If you want some whimsical white boy rap, get "Taste The Secret" by UGLY DUCKLING (late '90s). It's sort of a concept album. The The lyrics are hilarious, and the production is top notch.

If you're looking for something more classic, the first DE LA SOUL album ("3 Ft. High and Rising") is a must own. It almost singlehandedly widened the entire scope of hiphop at the time ('89) because it was so different and innovative. It's whimsical and playful, with moments of touching on serious topics.
Prince Paul's production is amazing, and could never hapen today due to sample clearance issues (much like Paul's Boutique). One of the most important hip hop albums of all time.

Not hugely into the genre but been really into mosdef/black star lately...

For me- Gorillaz, Roots Manuva ft Damon Albarn, Kano ft. Damon Albarn... only rap related to damon somehow.

I used to be huge into hip-hop. I think The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox is the best hip-hop album of all time. It's kinda no contest. I'm serious. Listen to it now. Even if you don't like hip hop. Listen.

I've liked a lot of rap/hip hop since I was a teenager... me and my pals used to listen to lots of Ice Cube and NWA.. Dr. Dre The Chronic in 1992 or so really blew me away. Back then I liked the stuff with lots of swearing and shooting guns and smoking drugs... what 16 year old suburban white boy wouldn't right?

Nowadays my favourite rap artist is mc chris... he's in lots of Adult Swim cartoons as different characters, any Sealab fans know him as Hesh.. he sings the song about Boba Fett, Fett's Vette. I love the silly stuff, I'm a lot less interested in shooting strangers now that I'm a mature and responsible adult.

Lots of great stuff has been mentioned in the thread, through the years I've also enjoyed Public Enemy, De la Soul, Mos Def, A Tribe Called Quest, Buck 65, Outkast... I'm looking forward to checking out some of the stuff mentioned here too!

i dont listen to much hip-hop, though DJ Shadow has some interesting things goin on from what ive heard.

I listen to a lot of rap. A LOT of rap. A lot of gangsta rap. We don't do that preachy "conscious" backpacker shit over here, I want the snarl and the wit and the bass kick and the anger and the hunger and maybe some actual good production.

'pac and Biggie (I rep the West, but "Notorious Thugz" is the shit). Dr. Dre only revolutionized rap what, four times? Eminem being one of those. Can't knock Jay-Z's hustle. Lil' Wayne is a deranged genius. Wu-Tang Clan is indeed nothing to fuck with - Raekwon, Ghostface, M-E-T-H-O-D Man (with Redman if you want a killer live show). UGK for life, RIP Pimp C. DJ Quik and Battlecat on the track. The Game is manages to make great records despite not being a very good rapper. Bay area - Keak Da Sneak, The Team, Hoodstarz, the Federation, Traxamillion, E-40, hell yes. Ice Cube, NWA, Westside Connection, bow down when you come to our town. Madvillain, though Doom is apparently an asshole. Oukast and Goodie Mob and the Dungeon Family. Camp Lo. Saul Williams dropped that album with Trent Reznor that is really the best thing Reznor's done in a decade. Missy and Timbaland. Snoop Dogg, and the Dogg Pound - why does nobody talk about the Dogg Pound anymore? And Beanie Sigel and Freeway are never going to be as well known as they deserve either. Papoose kills the mixtape game. David david david david Banner. Love for Kanye, even though I want to kick him in the balls for making something as bad as 808s and Heartbreak. The U.N. out in Long Island. T.I. the King. Rakim the God. Cannibal Ox and dOSEONE when I want to get weird. Big Daddy Kane. Public Enemy, what's the name of my DJ, London? Black Milk repping Detroit. Got to see Grandmaster Flash spin a DJ set one summer night in LA. Nate Dogg, king of the hook! The Clipse.

And, of course, the John Coltrane of the MPC, J Dilla. Rest in peace.

Madvillain is one of the hip hop records best of this decade. I've been a HUGE fan of Madlib ever since the Lootpack album (1999)....and MF DOOM is probably my favorite MC of the decade. The collab of the two is a match made in heaven.
If you're sick of the Madvillain LP, check out Madvillain 2.....which is the same rhymes by MF DOOM from the first Madvillain, with Madlib remixing the whole album. I think it might only be available through iTunes....and in a boxed set from Stones Throw.



Also, to get your current fix of both Madvillain members:

Madlib's latest installment in the Beat Conductor series, "Beat Conductor 5 & 6"....is a tribute to J Dilla. Good, cool, weird instrumental beat tape. (If you liked any of the Beat Conductor series, or J Dilla's "Donuts", get it.)
