Perhaps more Krautrock than psych, but classifications seem to be running pretty loose in this thread:

I don't really think of Atomic Rooster or Captain Beyond as psych.
But they rule. More people should listen to them.

Man you guys missed out. I just made so much money selling Acid Mothers Temple CDs.....
And yeah, I don't think of the whole heavy rock thing as psych, like Leaf Hound or Atomic Rooster.... but those bands fucking shred though.....

I picked up that Shocking Shaking Days comp. Really interesting stuff on there. There's been so many like the Psych Funk 101, Obsession, the Nigeria comps, The Sound of Siam, etc that all have really interesting stuff. I never got the whole Tropicalia thing though....

There've been some amazing comps of the Asian stuff similar to what tjlong posted.
r.o., you haven't been listening to the right Tropicalia.

those asian psych comps are great. most of these asian groups replicated "western" music and fashion that was popular at the time almost wholesale with very little regional or local influence - unlike say, tropicalia, afrobeat, or even turkish psych, all of which are pretty distinguishable from anything on Nuggets or stuff coming out of the west at the time. these asian bands, not so much, and maybe thats part of their appeal (it certainly is for me). some of them, i think mainly the japanese and korean ones, even sang in pidgin/gibberish english
os mutantes are amazing! but ive always had difficulty approaching tropicalia as a genre mainly because the "tropicalia bands" all sound so different. the only connecting thread amongst them, as far as i can tell, was some western pop cultural influence but other than that, they were all very unique sounding. caetano veloso sounds nothing like os mutantes just as strawberry alarm clock sounds nothing like phil ochs. i think it was more an artistic movement than any kind of sonically consistent "genre".

Yep, all true, tjlong.
I also love the Simla Beat comp and a lot of the Thai and Khmer stuff I've heard from the Sixties and Seventies. (And all the Bollywood stuff too.)
