huh, thats neat. so they're like a cover band for christian rock? do they play a set to warm up the congregation, then get the jam on when the money plate goes around, and finally bring the house down as everybody...dances and stuff and church is over?

when i was in high school i worked at an independent guitar store, this was mid 90s before the big chains and internet etc, anyways i had a customer who was in charge of purchasing a completely new pa system, keyboards, mics etc...the works. an older member had died and in her will was to have all her monies go to the church's musical....department? was near $50,000 worth of equipment when all was said and done, and this was tax free and with the church discount. i made a reallllll nice commission off that. Even helped him set everything up etc.

another thing i just thought of, the guy i bought the shin-ei fy-6 off of emailed me first to make sure I wasn't in a praiseband. i .

Sometimes they play the whole service, it's part of the vibe for these modern Churches that try to attract young people...

It was a super small service, like maybe 30 people including the 5 people in the band. They did songs in between the lessons and sermons like a normal service, instead of a chior it was a band

Bingo. I've played in church bands since I started playing bass (actually, it was a worship pastor who taught me to play) and it's basically that. A good overdrive, a distortion for lead lines, and a delay and some simple modulation for guitar. Delays play a big part of most of the songs, my buddy uses a Timeline and actually programs his delay times into his presets for each service. Like any type of music, "praise and worship" music has a kind of formula, but it's always what the band makes of it.

Depending on the size of the church, there is a pretty high production value. It's kind of what's expected at certain size churches, for better or worse. As a bassist, I kept a constant overdrive and a bit of delay or reverb to fill space. I also would use fuzz and filter to fill in for synth, if the song called for it. I was never paid, but some musicians in our church were.

This isn't me on bass in this song, but I did play in this band from time to time. My wife is actually one of the vocalists on this recording, she's on the far right:

What I've gathered at other places like HCFX and TGP is that the post-rock comment isn't far off if you remove all potentially aggressive sounds and have a couple of flavors of overdrive and/or clean boost. Tim or Timmy, Xotic, JHS, and whatever the flavor of the month is of YATS. Oh, and naturally Klons and Klones. Lots of delays and reverbs, especially for shimmer and pad-sounding stuff. Chorus or Leslie sims for modulation. Maybe some looping, or more practically an EHX Freeze. Maybe an E-bow.

Mostly it's a lot like the back-end time and modulation stuff you might use to smooth over something with interesting rough edges for a dream pop sound.
