I don't cover songs

Why cover songs if you can write your own?

because it's sometimes fun and you can learn from other peoples writing styles. especially when you put your twist on a song...if you can retain your personality and style while doing a well know song, it's a positive achievement IMO.
very seldom do i perform a cover song "live" but when i have it's gone over fukking great. if you "own" that shite it'll be nothing but fun.

wow, so the moderators "edit" button is where the quote button was and I almost retyped your original post.

Good thing I caught that.
Anywho, my response: It's just fun. I can relate to the mentality of wanting to be original, but I cannot resist putting a cover song as the first song of a set list. It gets people's attention, and I always get good comments on them. As musicians i don't think cover songs appeal to us when watching a band but to non-musician audience members I think it makes a difference if you play just one cover song as opposed to none.

The Books - None But Shining Hours
Guitar Vader - Magical Girl
My Bloody Valentine - Honey Power
and the occasional Oh Comely by Neutral Milk Hotel.
We're indie douchebags, and we have terrible voices. And that's the point.
