It also looks like he's using it on the other tunes, just not "Jerry's Breakdown".

So I'm not sure if it's still in print but if you can find it Christopher Arp of Pysopus put out a book of sweep picking exercises a while back. I have a copy, along with his 2 other books.

Thanks again, jfrey, I'll take a look see.

Not sure I really need a book though. What you guys have suggested in this thread has been enough to get me started. I was fooling around with fingering and stuff last night and was pretty happy with the results. I'm probably not gonna get too into complex sweeps. I think for my playing style, I'd like to keep it simple.

Oh, that's a good one, M_B.

I'll never be able to pull off stretches like that.

Ha ha. No, I haven't. Thank you, voerking. That's a wealth of information. That'll keep me busy for a while.

I think the most important thing about sweeping is lifting the fingers of your fretting hand. You've got two levels of syncing going on - one is getting your strumming hand to hit each string consistently, and making sure your fretting finger is there in time, the other is removing your fretting finger. Too early and you just get pick noise and sound like a bedroom shredder, too late and your notes ring out and are really indistinct and you sound like a hack.

Also, sweeping doesn't have to be fast to be rad.

Thanks, goroth.

Yeah, that seems to be the challenge. Not a technique for sloppy players. Timing and precision is key. I'm starting out slowly and hopefully will gradually build up my speed.

how are those btw? I thought about picking them up to get better at guitar. I figure if I can play the heavy shit I could probably play just about anything

A friend of mine who plays bass and is into crazy technical stuff recommended something interesting. With things like sweeping, you have to have a really strong fretting hand. He would tape some of his fingers together so that he had to use his ring finger and pinky to fret. This is especially important for the hammer-ons you might be doing in sweeps. Those fingers are usually the weakest, so it's something to focus on. Those pinky hammer-ons....ugh.

They're all just straight exercises. They're boring, but good.

Chris Letchford of Scale the Summit has a book out also. I think he may have a second one also, but I only have the first. I've been going through that again recently.
