Anyone use software compressors? Was trying some out when mixing a track some friends and I made for fun. I have no idea what I'm doing

I use a Diamond Bass Compressor at the very end of my chain, and its always on. It helps fatten up everything, smooths things out just a touch, and it does't seem to interfere with anything like my fuzz or dirt. Mind you, the Diamond is a pretty mild fixed compression (3:1 or so), but it does what I want it to.

Are there any guides for proper use of them? I tried the ones in Audition and some presets worked well. But I'd like to have a firm grasp on how to use compressors in production.

I've never used a compressor, but I want a Boss CS-1 because I'm going through a weird early Boss obsession. Should I?

You are the last person who probably needs a compressor, it's like against everything you stand for and your whole aesthetic...

Compressionless might be a new genre...

The Dr. Sherm had some good posts and I can attest that his recordings are excellent and he knows what's the what with the this and the that...

Not every situation and or instrument has to have a compressor on it... Especially Donny...

This thing (compressor), to me is the most confusing fx to start to learn.
So, would it kill the picking dynamics when you're play around with your touch sensitive od pedals/amps?
And what would be the difference putting it in front or after drive pedals?

With guitar when set "right" it makes the quiet stuff louder and the louder stuff quieter but at a rate and level that you set...

It evens out peaks and valleys... It can be used and abused many different ways but for guitar it's all about keeping the quiet strumming and picking and the loud thrashing and bashing at the same level for whatever else is down the line... Effects and Amps act differently depending on the level hitting them so sometimes a Compressor can help one way or the other...
