I know it says it's a bass, but it seems to cover guitar range as well, so I'm willing to count it.
And there we have "elevenstrings"

I hope so, otherwise my examples are all for naught.

I've always been kind of curious why you rarely see them outside of metal music.
I think it's because it's the most obvious application of a lower range, at least to the average guitar-playing listener. Especially after listening to groups like Gojira or Meshuggah.
I'm going to have to go ahead and be a dick here, but Gojirra use six strings tuned 1 tone down, and occasionally they'll do drop C. Could be something off the latest album that's in A, can't remember. But the fact that they get such a massive sound from near-to-standard tuning is one if the reasons I love them.

Animals as leaders new album has some quiet noodly crap on an 8 string that is fairly cool.

Well fuck me I thought that they were tuned down lower than that + just playing higher up the neck.

Well that's the obvious reason they're so frequently used in metal music.
I'm more curious about why you don't see them more often outside of metal.
Take backwardsvoyagers post for example, why don't you see any 2-pieces using them for more low end?
well I guess a lot of people already use baritones for a similar reason, you just don't get the same upper pitch range as you do with a seven-string. I guess it makes more sense when there's only one guitarist/bassist in the band.

I was GASing for a 7-stringer for aaages and had totally forgetten about it until now. time to track down one of these:

I think I've seen this posted on ILF before.
Definitely one of the only 7-strings that I would actually buy.
I think I'll stick to my plan to get a baritone or bass vi though

Do you know you're playing a bass with too many strings?

Yeah it's messed up isn't it. So much heavy, so little down tuning.

Jean, can you play your 11 string standing? or is strictly for sitting due to balance/weight?

yeah, I can. there's a couple of youtubes out there (try searching "nuclear rabbit gilman") - though, it was designed to be super-comfortable sitting down and it's pretty heavy.

Just watched that set. Pretty awesome stuff. I can imagine that would be tiring wearing that big bass for a full set.
