The Excelsior is a KILLER amp, especially for the dollar. I'd try to snag a Class 5 combo or one of those Vox ac4 combos.

I have a V1, the Marshalls and Mesas are very usable, as is the Super-sonic (basically a Sunn Model T on steroids). I'd expect the new ones to be good as well.

They have the characteristic thump, sustain, etc. of the amps they're modeling. No suprises.

I'm in the SE corner by all the potatoes.

I have the GVT15h. Buy it. Now. It's pretty awesome, especially for that price.

I had a GVT-15H that I ran through an Emperor 2x12, pretty cool little amp for sure! Not quite as loud as I thought it should be at 15W and didn't behave with all my fuzz/dirt pedals but the EQ is powerful and it can be tweaked to death. Eventually replaced mine with a Hovercraft Dwarvenaut, bass spec'd.

Also, the reason they're cheaper now days is because Ampeg switched from a Korean to a Chinese manufacturer and quality took a bit of hit as a result. My buddy had issues with two GVT15s in a row but Ampeg offers some great customer service and replaced both amps under warranty.

Here's a comparison shot of my old Korean GVT vs his newer Chinese model:
