I use a hand drill since it's quick, easy, portable, and saves on sapce that takes up to 1/2" bits. I do use a unibit sometimes but it hasn't seen much use and is already showing deterioration, it also needs to have a lot of depth, which can be a problem.
I've found placing a washer on the enclosure marking with a XACTO knife and using a center-punch followed by a small pilot drill bit and then opened up with the actual size bit or the unibit to be my method. I used to measure everything but found that eyeballing it is actually more accurate for me as where you make the center-punch and rounded corners can throw you off.
Fuck a hand drill. I don't know how you guys do that shit. I bought a Ryobi drill press for less than 200 bucks and it works perfect. I don't drill nearly as often as a lot of you dudes either, but hand drills fucking suck.

No way, dude! I live for the moment when the drill binds and it spins around and smashes me in the knuckles.

Dude, right? I can't get down with the idea that a hand drill is quick and easy. A drill press is so much faster and easier. I get that they take up space, but shit.
However, my little 12 volt Hitachi drill is the best thing ever for putting the backs on enclosures. Set it to high speed, put the clutch on about 6... perfect. Super quick, never a stripped screw.
I did used to use a hand drill a bit when I used the little mini drill press from Harbor Freight. It was rare that I had to, but I hated it when I did. Like drilling an EHX box once... damn thing snagged and took a chunk out of my hand. Never had the problem with a drill press.
For the cost, a drill press w/ step bit is a no brainer. I think my Ryobi was about $160 and it's perfectly suited for the job.
Having said that, I recently started using a hand drill with a small bit to start the holes (after marking 'em with a punch), and i get much better results with things lining up precisely.

The dent helps get the bit started exactly where I want it. Drill presses are ideal when it comes to this sort of thing, but I can get pretty accurate with punches and a hand-drill.
Yup I have a drill press but can't tell you how many times I have done this. The real key is a Good unibit. Cheep as good as expensive. Measure 2x, punch with tool and hammer, pilot use unibit...
Perfect holes are overrated as you have knobs, washers etc. Placement is all about perfection though.. If you care... For my pedal board I blast holes by eye ROFl.. for a pro's board everything is just so.. I have personally always liked the DIY look of a mangled box... But thats me ;-)

Lol. I do all my stuff with a cordless Li-Ion hand drill. Id love a drill press but I live in an apartment and dont have the space for one. I use a really nice spring loaded centre punch, then a 2mm bit as a pilot hole then I have a set of drill sizes in 0.5mm steps from 1mm up to 13mm Covers everything I need...
Let be honest here as long as you can hold the drill steady, accuracy is defined by how thoroughly you measured and checked your measurements
