I thought Frances the Mute and Amputechture were SOLID. Some people seem to trash the stuff after De-loused just because it's less accessible.
The last two were pretty disappointing, though.

Frances is great.
I really like the slow, spacey half of Amputechture.

I love all their stuff. Even Octahedron but it's my least fave. their new album is spotty but the spots are really good, I don't understand why people don't seem to like it. It's pretty different but whatever

People never like different. It scares them.
Still haven't really listened to much. Just a few songs off De-Loused. Not enough to really form a solid opinion I don't think.
I need to find some time to listen to the album start to finish

Some really strangely dressed dude blasted Inertiatic ESP in Best Buy once when I was a lot younger. I was really confused. They grew on me super hard

I think John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra would be a sad panda if they read that.

I find De-Loused, Francis and Amputechture all great. De-Loused just solid front to back, Francis they went really heavy on the latin vibe, Amputechture is the most proggy album. Tremulant is good, but they hadn't totally found their stride yet. Bedlam, Octahedron and Noctourniquet are a bit meh to me.
I'd start at De-Loused and see if you like it. If you do, then give Francis and Amputechture a spin

I had Tremulant first, but I appreciated it more after De-Loused.

So I just listened to De-Loused from start to finish.
I liked it but I wasn't completely enamored by it.
The playing, arrangement, and the use of effects are all amazing but I have to admit that I don't love his singing.
The high pitch, almost screaming parts just aren't for me.
The less intense singing and less scream-y parts are excellent though.
Definitely still good music.
I'll have to give it a few more play-throughs to really form a solid opinion I think

The singing'll grow on you.
Check out Francis the Mute, but make sure you haven't listened to any of Santana's first three records recently. It'll seem a lot better if you can trick yourself into thinking it's "100% fresh."

Unfortunately, Cedric's voice is either something that you're going to be able to deal with, or not. I personally like it, but I totally get why it grates on some people.

Particularly on the Mars Volta stuff. I think it's a lot different on At the Drive-In albums.

I like Frances the Mute the best. But I'm a little fuzzy on the stuff between that and the last one.
