12's are popular on guitar mostly because their specific high end. .Just enough range (if the cone is light and old-fashioned) and a lot of coloration. Has little to do with the low end, which is more a matter of design and enclosure.

Horns do suck, especially the Foster ones that SWR used. I keep it dialed to zero.
