I don't own anything I'm not willing to use.

Otherwise it's not a piece of gear, it's a 'collectible', and I don't own "collectibles" in guitars or firearms.

Yeah I don't have anything like that or any plans to get any gear I can't use properly all the time. I feel like it would be wasted just sitting around. :idk:

I'm just gonna leave my usual twp cents in here. .

In order of importance:

Does it make the sound you like?
Does it play well, or in the case of pedals, does it have the control options you want/like?
Can you afford it now, or how important are the other two things to you that you can wait for it?

I also like to be the guy that reminds everyone that a lot of popular bands don't use hardly ANY boutique effects. It's not a pedal, but I just built a junker guitar, the tones of which I am loving more than my $1200 G&L at the moment.

I like the advice of playing the expensive thing first, then seeing what cheaper things come close to it, or if you can notice a difference at all

1. Do you have to have it now/got a show or recording date that requires you to have this piece of gear?
2. Is it going to take a couple days/weeks/months/a year to afford it?
3. Does it help you be a better musician?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Yes- buy the cheapie and sell it after getting the spendy if you like.
No- don't buy a damn thing until you can afford the spendy.

2. Couple Days- FUCK OFF CHEAPIE
Couple Weeks- FUCK OFF CHEAPIE
Couple Months- FUCK OFF CHEAPIE
Almost a year/over a year- Buy the cheapie and sell it after acquiring the prize.
Use your credit card and pay the bill off before the next billing cycle. Use BillMeLater, you get 6 months to pay it off. You're an IDIOT if you don't know how to play this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. IDK, but it inspires me to play more and explore new ideas- buy it now and save for the spendy
No- don't be a dumbass, save your money!!!!!!!!!!!

When trying a "new" type of pedal, I'll usually get a cheapo to see if I even can/like using it. And then upgrade or flip from there. Been looking for a cheap env filter to mess with for a while. There is nothing wrong with cheaper pedals and a lot of times I feel some expensive pedals are overwhelming or over priced. But that is a different discussion.

Best decision I ever made was to buy a decent multi unit. It lets you try out whatever effect you want and if it's a better one you can often adjust the parameters more than you could on an individual pedal. from there you can find the things you are more likely to actually use, and then get the best version of whatever that may be. I'm using a GT 10 for all my wierdo effects now and then I have a bunch of dirt pedals and I am happy with that.
