I go by a few rules when purchasing new gear. In order of importance:
1. Does it make sounds I like?
2. Is it comfortable to play?
3. Can I afford it? If not, how willing am I to save for it?

I also keep in mind that there are a ton of famous musicians who've become famous and toured for years and years with really cheap guitars.

Some day I'd like to walk into a guitar shop, sit down, blindfold myself, and have the guys bring me random guitars without telling me what they are. I'd be curious to see what would happen.....
Pretty rational stuff.

Way to condition us to perceive reality as a construct of semi-arbitrary value, capitalism. :excellent:

Yeah.... it just seems like a lot of mid-range and even low price-range guitars can be just as good of instruments as the high-priced ones with a little setup and maybe a couple little upgrades. For instance, I also have a mockingbird that I refinished and turned into a nine-string. Unplugged, it seems like it would sound like ass, but you plug it in, and it sounds great. I did put some nice Gibson HBs in it though. The cheap tuners even keep it in tune pretty good.

Both have their place, but there's something immensely satisfying about making a couple cheap and easy tweaks to an inexpensive axe and turning it into an amazing playing and sounding-giant killer :thumb:
Special low-frequency version.
