I haven't played live in a couple years :( When I did it was full on amp distortion all the time, no foolin around type music. Or I played bass through a Rat deucetone, which gave me 3 levels of distortion and that was plenty for a live setting. Of course I've gotten much more into pedals lately, but I realize the boards I use at home would never make it to the stage that way. (if not for simple fear of losing/damaging that many pedals somehow)I keep a board loaded with OD, half a dozen fuzzes (maybe more) delay/reverb/chorus and a couple randoms on it (bitcrusher/whatever) So I can pull whatever sound I want whenever I want it. Then I have a second board I tear down and setup with whatever other pedals I have to try out different orders/different sounds.

LIve I couldn't see myself with more than 6 or so pedals on a board. PRobably 3 levels of gain, an octave fuzz for the really hairy parts, delay/reverb and maybe a chorus (though I would love to play in a band where I could throw in some crushed bits). Odds are if my band was to become active again (it's a long shot) I'd be looking at a high gain distortion (elements) and a gnarly fuzz to throw on occasionally and melt a face or two.

Any recording I've ever done was in a live type context with the whole band playing together and little to no overdubs so it would have to be a really simple setup for that as well, but If I were to ever record track by track I would likely bring about a dozen fuzzes to get the exact sound I was after.

Oh how I miss playing n a band...

My pedalboard is based on the sounds I need for my band so it stays exactly the same for gigs, recording and rehearsal. If I intend to play something live I won't record it using any effects I don't plan on lugging around with me.

Normally at home it stays the same too but if I'm recording for other projects I just pull off the ones I need and set them up on the floor :idk:

ha, i'm not alone :)

except I change things around and lose/discover sounds all the time... so it's a bit changing, but i tend to stick to the general sonic ideas

it's a cool approach though because it makes you try to incorporate new things and really work WITH the music in my opinion :thumb:

Home and recording is the same, as i record the most stuff there. Here are no limits, i use that, what sits best in the mix, generates the most intense effect and haunts me in regards of the musical idea/song.
Live is fixed for me. For each band i use its own board that changes very slowly (one time a year minor changes). I play my shit live as good as possible and try to put all my energy in to make it a unique live event for us (as band) and for the audience. Fuck it, if the phaser is live from the möbius and on the recording from the super duper CV driven setup. No one cares. The audience wants emotions and honest music - at least that's what my life stuff is about and what i think the people expect of us...

Home and live are the same for me, but I have two different bands and I got sick of switching pedals back and forth when I went from one band to the other. So I ended up building separate boards for each band, although I do have to switch my Mobius between boards, because I'm not dropping 4 bills for a second one.

At home, I have all my pedals lying around, but I usually just hook up one or two pedals when I'm playing alone. Then live, I have different 3-4 (usually) pedal setups for every band, though I can get by with two and a tuner, just thrown on the ground. I've stopped using a board in every band except one, because I'm bouncing around set ups so often that it wastes time to have a set in stone pedalboard. The only time in recent memory I've used a board is for Joy Sores tour, and that's because I was using quite a few pedals, and I didn't have to worry about changing it up every day. Just, huck the board in the van. And, when recording, I tend to bring a box of pedals, and still only use 3 or 4.

I feel so strange actually saying this out loud. I've changed, man.

But about all my pedals are on my board to play around with. No band so no worries there. When I was in a band I would leave everything on for practice and just take what I would be using for live shows. I seriously need to find some people to jam with.

ok i'm jumping in on this...

i've done sets of studio sessions outside of my home / friends' homes i think only five times in my life, three as a musician and two as a student. only two of them where i was playing was i on guitar and both times i used the rig that i was currently using for shows. third time i was in as a musician i was on drums but both bassists in my band did the same, exact rig they used live. oddly though i added electronic drums to two improv tracks we just made up on the spot as segues for the album and i never used that live since we never played those live...

i think it's probably somewhat of a situational scenario - if it's a band or an artist that's already actively performing, they probably pretty often want to use the same rig, unless they're the type that are trying for their studio scenario to be more than what they can pull off live. if it's an act who's just working in the studio, either entirely or just as a starting point, it's probably more common for switching around and trying whatever's available. that's part of why i have shitloads of pedals despite their not staying in my rig, if i'm recording someone they have a pretty massive arsenal to choose from if they want to experiment.
:excellent:

Cripples with severe health issues don't gig these days, so I can speak historically (or optimistically).

My live rig and recording rig have always been the same, with additional backup gear/flavor stuff that's useful for project stuff on occasion. I also don't generally sell gear, especially for sounds that I can't get any other way (certain filters etc come in) or the occasional piece of gear I have an irrational attachment to (Boss ME-10, looking at you, that thing was the Jesus of its time).

I can strip down and go 'minimal' either one of two ways: a custom 3-in-1 pedal I had made a year or two back with octave fuzz, analog delay, and tremp into the Space Echo and call it good into the Jazz Chorus or Deluxe, or just bring the synth guitar Jaguar and the GR-55 and laugh my way to crazy town.

Realistically though I'll never gig again so it's a moot question. I have some rack units I'm unlikely to bring live, even if I was perfectly able to these days and gigging, simply because they're old and fragile and hard to find ones that sound the way I want (tuning the LFOs is a pain).

curious, what're the old & fragile rack units? sorry to hear that about the health issues dude, that sucks. :(

I have 5 Digitech RDS rack delays, 2 ART SGX racks, a ART SGE, Boss DE-200, Boss GL-100, Behringer V Amp Pro, and a Yamaha REX-50 (SPX-90 in a tabletop) that is hiding and bolted in a rack drawer. Might be one or two more in the closet I've neglected to remember.

The GL-100, a couple of the best sounding Digitech RDS, and the V Amp are in my recording rig fulltime now along with other stuffs.
