Like Tom Morello once paraphrased, It don't have to be loud to be heavy as shit.

i still think a heavy picking hand is the foundation of heaviness
i've been working in guitar stores for over 3 years now and i know very well that that's what most young players lack... instead, they turn up the gain and still bitch about not sounding heavy
then i take the guitar, turn the gain down to a half of their setting and absolutely destroy

results may vary, but

I don't know. I think that that leaves out something like tech death which is definitely heavy but in many cases pretty much requires a lighter touch. It's a different kind of heavy though than something like sludge or doom, for example.

i might be biased because i don't really find tech death that heavy
have you ever seen any of the Kayzer's guitar demos? Seems to me like he has a very heavy hand - heavy, but technical and controlled. Even in his regular pedal demos, you can HEAR the attack, it's like a bulldozer

I agree. I would have loved to hear that in the era it came from! I think it is because classical is not a true pop music anymore. All the true innovators have died. Look at Segovia, he had soul where a good many modern players don't. Actually I think it died once they started calling it classical music vs orchestral, symphonic ect. And I think Jazz it heading that way/is that way.
NSFW for non heavy Bach stuff

Honestly feel is super important so I know that I will never be comfortable in a true blue metal band that won't allow me to throw disjointed jazz jams but I'm happy to see the theory in what people believe gives them that heavy feel. Gear I feel can be a crutch, I think that's what I do enjoy about music, it is what it is because of feel.
Edit someone fix this damn link

Yeah, I love em, but don't put them on high enough rotation...probably because I listen to music mostly when I'm driving and either HoF's BBW, neurosis' honor found in decay or fucking CONAN make it into the stereo first and then I just get stuck on them....for days.

What about just playing in the rehearsal room by yourself. Crank the volume so that your whole self shakes. Tune down a little - even a semitone can do it (it worked for Cannibal Corpse).
Then just bang out an E5, or even the open string. Let it ring out, then vary some rhythms. Palm mute every now and then to get a feel for the "chunk chunk" and to vary the rhythm more. If you are down with it, start getting polyrhythmic - play a rhythm in 7 and emphasise stuff with a typical 4/4 rock feel.
I think a lot of being heavy is about creating rhythms - it's not necessarily about scales, tuning or speed, even though these are all factors. For a point of reference, compare Meshuggah's "Bleed" (which is shockingly brutal, but just one tone, for the most part), or Spastic Ink's "See, and It's Sharp!" which is only two notes in the whole song - C and C#.
Anything from Sabbath's first four albums is evidence that you don't need walls of distortion to be brutal.
Opeth's "Master's Apprentice" is evidence that you don't even need to tune down to be brutal.
I dig the way that you're trying to go out of your musical comfort zone - props!

I agree 100% with goroth. Volume and a little downtuning will get you thinking the right way and then you can go from there. My introduction to teh slow and heavy was Earth and after listening to them I ran my guitar through a muff into my bass amp, tuned my Eb down to Db and just started fucking around with those easy little drop d power chords on the minor scale. It was really simple but I just felt like I had learned the doom equivalent of the I-IV-V and had opened up a ton of doors.
