Yes and yes!

Spent all day in the rehearsal room today and discovered the following:
1) batteries on a camera get eaten waaaaaay quick, which resulted in me ditching it for the iPhone
2) close micing didn't sound as good as the iPhone (which was a couple of metres away). Think it's the proximity effect mushing out the bass. Will rerecord tomorrow.
3) I'm balls at getting stuff to sound like other stuff. I'm just going to dial in some sounds and rock out regardless of if it sounds like the LP or not.

Definitely better to get cool sounds and play than to try to emulate the sound of the original record! I'm surprised the iPhone sounds better than close micing, that doesn't seem right! Although I haven't tried the mic on an iPhone, maybe they're unusually good for phones.

Nah, the mic (audix i5) sounds way better, but the bass on the iPhone recording sounds like how I heard it in the rehearsal room, whereas the mic was kinda... Boofy. Noticeable with Slayer palm mutes, they just became indistinct. God I hate knowing nothing about recording. Will try and mic the speaker ca 10 cm from the grill and see if that helps. That killswitch engage dude mics cabs like that.

Idk!

I like having a close mic and a room mic for guitar cabs. ATM it's my favourite way of recording guitar but YMMV I'm normally micing clean tones or wicked nasty fuzz tones.

SLAAAAAAAAYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!
Serenity in Murder.
Cannibal Corpse - Pick Axe Murders
Deicide - Blame it on God
Pantera - Great Southern Trendkill, because that outro riff.....jism-inducing.

And some Eyehategod for the grooviness

Argh! Nearly forgot, some Carcass is cool, too.
Or Morbid Angel, earlier Mordbid Angel.

I tried to get that super scooped dime sound yesterday, jamming some Cowboys, and failed. It just sounded ass. I'll record some pantera and just shove a good heavy tone in there. What settings are you using vidret?

Popey you have some great suggestions. Where the Slime live shall make an appearance. Maybe the outro to GSTK. Will try and learn a Cannibal song at short notice too - maybe one of their slow grindy tunes.

I FUCKING hate syncing audio and video, might just do good audio and some photos of the settings. At the risk of creating a crap video, but shit, it's about the riffs.

Just take a pic of the settings and put an awesome audio in there, and that's that.
SHOW ALL OF THE SETTINGS!!!

I'm interested in: crunch, rat, high gain, low gain dynamic; and all of those with and without EQ (EQ as you wish)
I don't care about the riffs. The more inspired they are the more I'll love the demo.

Sorry for derailing, but do you guys prefer to hear well-known riffs over demoer's riffs/impros in demos?

Maiden is my all time favourite band, so I'd struggle to only put one riff in there. Might demo the entire Seventh Son album...
hmm...

HAH!

I'm also a bad person for liking the rerecorded versions of Prowler and Sanctuary from the 1988 Can I Play with Madness EP thing (with Bruce of course) better than the Dianno versions.

BRUCE FTW!!!

vidret wrote:gotta put some slayer in there man. they're playing grönan next week or something btw, you going? costs like nothing.

Dunno - I only really like Slayer up until the Decade of Aggression recording - after that I don't really care a whole lot, and the last 2 times of seen them they were kinda boring. But it's Slayer so... you going?

vidret wrote:oh yeah fucking yeah, pantera's gotta go in there. i think i said it before somewhere - not a lot except an amp at HUGE volumes has allowed the sustain to ring at the end of "cemetery gates" - the elements pulled it off though!

something sludgy too!

Dude, that sounds sweet!

Sludgy, like early Mastodon? Can't beat Crusher Destroyer.

Fuck yeah!!! I love that little vocal "hah!" he slips in between lines in where the slime lives. Gets me every time.
Sorry, CC is a pain in the arse...but if you can pull it off, I'd be all about it.....yeah yeah....TWSS....

Yeah dude, photos is cool. Riffs are the focus!
